Timing Belt Replacement Cost by Vehicle Class
The class your car falls into drives the labour hours, which drive the bill. Here's the four-bucket breakdown plus the platform-specific examples within each.
Why class drives cost
- • Engine layout. Inline 4 = quick. Transverse V6 = labour-heavy (often need to remove an engine mount). Boxer V6 = unique routing.
- • Engine size. Bigger engines need more access work. A V6 timing cover is bigger than a 4-cyl cover; more bolts, more accessory clearance.
- • Accessibility. Tightly packaged engine bays (compact cars, SUVs) make every nut harder to reach. The same job can take 30-40% longer in a cramped bay.
- • Labour rate. Luxury dealerships charge $150-$200/hr; specialty European shops $130-$180/hr; mainstream independents $90-$140/hr; rural independents $80-$110/hr.
- • Parts cost. Genuine OEM Audi/VW parts cost 30-50% more than the Japanese equivalent. Even aftermarket kits run higher for European platforms.
- • Tooling. Some Audi/VW jobs require dealer-only tools (cam holders), which independents charge extra to source or rent.
| Class | Belt only | With water pump | Labour hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact 4-cylinder | $400-$700 | $700-$1,100 | 3-4 hours |
| Midsize V6 transverse | $700-$1,200 | $1,000-$1,500 | 6-8 hours |
| SUV / truck | $800-$1,500 | $1,200-$1,800 | 6-8 hours |
| Luxury European | $1,200-$2,500+ | $1,800-$2,800 | 5-9 hours |
Compact 4-cylinder
Older Honda Civic D-series (pre-2006), older Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Sonata 4-cyl, older 4-cyl Camry. Most modern compacts use a chain. Belt jobs on this class are quick because the engine is inline, the timing cover is small, and the front of the engine is accessible without removing major components.
| Platform / engine | Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1996-2005 Honda Civic (D16) | $450-$650 | Belt + tensioner standard. Pump bundle adds ~$200. |
| 1990-1997 Honda Accord (F22) | $500-$750 | Older platform; tooling getting harder to find. |
| 1998-2004 Toyota Corolla (1ZZ-FE) | $400-$650 | Chain on most years; verify. |
| 2001-2010 Hyundai Sonata 4-cyl (Beta II) | $500-$800 | Aggressive 60K interval. Interference. |
Midsize V6 transverse
The Honda J-series V6 is the dominant platform here, also older Toyota 1MZ-FE / 3MZ-FE V6s, older Nissan VQ. Transverse layout means the belt sits on the right side of the engine bay, often requiring engine-mount removal for clearance. Water pump bundle is essentially mandatory; the labour overlap is huge.
| Platform / engine | Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2003-2017 Honda Pilot / Odyssey J35 | $850-$1,200 | Bundle: $1,100-$1,500. Interference. |
| 2002-2007 Honda Accord V6 (J30) | $800-$1,150 | Bundle adds $200-$300. |
| 1994-2006 Toyota Camry V6 (1MZ-FE) | $700-$1,000 | Non-interference. Bundle: $950-$1,300. |
| 2004-2010 Toyota Sienna 3.3 (3MZ-FE) | $800-$1,100 | Non-interference. Higher labour due to layout. |
SUV / truck
Older Tacoma / 4Runner / T100 with the 5VZ-FE V6, Pilot/Odyssey at the upper end of midsize that many people class as SUV, older Ford Explorer 4.0 SOHC. The 4.0 SOHC is technically a chain but uses a cassette tensioner that wears, often grouped with belt-platform discussions. Higher labour due to vehicle size and engine bay congestion.
| Platform / engine | Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1995-2004 Toyota Tacoma 5VZ V6 | $700-$1,100 | Non-interference. Solid platform. |
| 1996-2002 Toyota 4Runner 5VZ | $800-$1,200 | Same engine as Tacoma; slightly more labour. |
| 2003-2017 Honda Pilot J35 | $900-$1,300 | Treated as midsize V6 by some shops. |
| 1997-2010 Ford Explorer 4.0 SOHC | $900-$1,400 | Chain with belt-driven cam tensioner. Inspect at 100K. |
Luxury European
Audi 1.8T (B5/B6 A4, TT, older Passat), Audi 2.7T V6, Volvo 5-cylinder white-block, older BMW belt platforms (rare, most BMW chain). Higher labour rate ($130-$180/hr at independent specialists, $150-$200/hr at dealers), higher parts cost (genuine OEM Audi/VW parts cost 30-50% more than equivalent Japanese), tighter tolerances on tensioner setup. Independent European-specialist shops save 30-40% vs dealer.
| Platform / engine | Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1997-2005 Audi A4 1.8T (BPY/AMU) | $1,200-$1,800 | Bundle: $1,500-$2,200. Interference. |
| 2000-2006 Audi A6 2.7T | $1,800-$2,500 | Notoriously labour-intensive. |
| 1999-2009 Volvo S60/V70 5-cyl | $1,200-$1,800 | Bundle: $1,500-$2,100. Interference. |
| 2002-2008 Mini Cooper Tritec | $900-$1,400 | BMW-shop pricing applies. |
