How We Calculate Timing Belt Cost Estimates
We aggregate four independent sources into the cost ranges shown across the site. We disclose what we use, when we last reviewed each input, and the reasoning behind any range we publish. Our recommendations are independent, no paid placement, no manufacturer affiliation, no dealership advertising relationship.
Sources
2026 RepairPal aggregated estimator data
RepairPal aggregates real shop quotes from its certified network. We use their by-vehicle estimator outputs as the upper-bound anchor in our ranges. Cited per page where used.
AAA Your Driving Costs 2026 report
AAA's annual cost-of-ownership report includes maintenance overhead and labour-rate context by region. Used to validate our state-by-state labour-rate ranges.
Manufacturer service schedules
Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Audi/VW, Volvo official service schedule documents (2026 model year). Drives our service-interval table on /timing-belt-service-interval.
Gates Corporation Timing Belt Replacement Interval Guide
Industry-standard reference for belt-driven vs chain-driven engines, interference status, and recommended intervals. Drives our 50-engine lookup table on /interference-vs-non-interference-engine.
Shop-quote samples
We collect public quote samples from automotive forums (CivicX, ToyotaNation, NASIOC, AcuraZine, AudiZine, MyVolvo) and our own quote-shopping. Sample size, region, and date are disclosed on cost pages where this data is the primary source.
Aftermarket-kit pricing
Listed prices from RockAuto, Amazon, AutoZone, and FCP Euro for the kit brands we cite (Aisin, Gates, ContiTech, Continental, Dayco). Date-stamped on the page where used. Subject to change.
What we don't do
- • No paid placement. We don't accept payment to feature specific shops, brands, or services in our cost ranges or recommendations.
- • No manufacturer affiliation. We're not affiliated with Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Audi/VW, Volvo, or any other car manufacturer.
- • No dealership advertising bias. We don't have advertising relationships with dealer groups, our recommendations on independent vs dealer are based on cost data, not commercial relationships.
- • No lead-gen forms. We don't collect your contact details to sell to repair shops. Our readers want information, not sales calls.
- • Affiliate disclosure. We do include Amazon affiliate links to specific timing-belt-and-water-pump kits we mention. The cost estimates are independent; the affiliate link is solely on the parts side.
Sample methodology: how we get to "$700-$1,800 with water pump"
Worked example for the cornerstone homepage range, "$700 to $1,800 belt + water pump bundle":
| Component | Low | High | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Belt + tensioner + idlers parts (Aisin/Gates kit) | $120 | $280 | RockAuto / Amazon, Apr 2026 |
| Water pump (with kit or standalone Aisin) | $80 | $200 | RockAuto / Amazon, Apr 2026 |
| Coolant + gaskets + crank/cam seals | $30 | $80 | RockAuto, Apr 2026 |
| Labour: 3.5-8.5 hrs at $100-$160/hr | $350 | $1,360 | RepairPal regional labour data |
| Tax + shop fees (5-12%) | $30 | $80 | Typical |
| Raw total | $610 | $2,000 | |
| Published range (clipping outliers) | $700 | $1,800 |
The published range narrows the raw range by clipping the cheapest and most expensive outliers (rural-Mississippi shop with a 4-cyl kit on the low end; Bay Area dealer with luxury-European labour on the high end). The result is a range that covers ~80% of the realistic cost distribution for the average US-market belt-driven vehicle.
Update cadence
- • Cost figures: reviewed quarterly. Big swings in labour rates or parts cost trigger an immediate update.
- • Service-interval data: reviewed annually unless a manufacturer issues a TSB.
- • Interference / engine data: reviewed annually. Engine specs don't change for existing vehicles, only new model entries.
- • Shop-quote samples: sample refresh every 6 months.
Last full review: April 2026.
