Honda J35 V6 (Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline, older Accord, Acura MDX/RDX/TL): $750 to $1,400 with the water pump bundle. Older 4-cylinder Honda Accord and Civic with a belt: $400-$900. Modern Civic, CR-V, and 4-cyl Accord use a timing chain, no scheduled replacement. The J-series is interference, the older 4-cyl D-series is interference, the K-series chain is also interference but doesn't get replaced on a schedule.

The J-series deep dive

The J-series 3.5L V6 (J35A, J35Z, J35Y variants) is Honda's belt-driven V6 platform from 2003 onwards. 105,000-mile / 7-10 year service interval. Interference design. Belt failure means $3,000-$5,000 in valve damage minimum.

Common across Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline, Accord V6, Acura MDX, RDX (older), TL. The exact engine code varies (J35A4, J35Z2, etc.) but the belt is the same Gates / Aisin part across most variants. Bundle the water pump, no exceptions, the labour overlap is total.

A Honda dealer will quote $1,300-$1,800 for the bundle. A reputable Honda independent will quote $850-$1,200 for the same job, same parts, same warranty.

Honda's modern chain transition

The Honda model line shifted toward chains starting in the early 2000s and is now mostly chain-driven. If you have any of these, you don't need a scheduled timing-belt replacement, you have a chain.

  • Civic: switched from belt (D16) to chain (R-series, then K-series) in 2006.
  • Civic Si / Type R: K-series chain since launch.
  • CR-V: K-series chain from 2002.
  • Accord 4-cyl: K-series chain from 2003.
  • Accord V6 (modern): switched to V6 chain in 2018+ generation.
  • HR-V, Insight, Pilot (newer 2019+): chain.

If a shop quotes you a "timing belt service" on any of these, get a second opinion. You don't have a belt. See belt vs chain for verification.

Legitimate add-ons

  • Water pump. ~$80-$120 for an Aisin OEM unit. Always bundle on J-series.
  • Drive (serpentine) belt. $30-$60. Cheap; replace while in there.
  • Front crankshaft seal. $20-$40 part; labour included with belt access. Replace if showing wear.
  • Valve cover gasket. $30-$80 if leaking. Common on high-mileage J-series.
  • Coolant flush. Cooling system is open anyway, ~$50-$100 extra.

Questionable add-ons

  • Spark plugs. Only if you're at the spark-plug interval. Don't be talked into it.
  • Motor mounts. Only if showing symptoms (vibration at idle, clunking on shifts). The right mount comes off but doesn't need replacing unless damaged.
  • Engine flush. Rarely warranted. Walk away from any shop pushing this without a specific reason.
  • "While we're in there, transmission service." Two completely separate jobs. Get the trans service priced as its own line item.
Known issues / TSBs: No major belt-itself TSBs on the J-series. The front crankshaft seal can develop a slow leak on high-mileage J35s; replace it during the belt job for ~$20 extra in parts. Valve cover gaskets often weep on 100K+ J-series engines; not a belt issue, but cheap to fix while the timing covers are off.
